About Us

Who We Are

This council, serving nearly 50,000 AFL-CIO members, retirees and friends of labor, is the heart, soul and nerve center for workers across the Miami Valley.  Our members live and work in 12 counties: Butler, Campaign, Clark, Clinton, Darke, Greene, Logan, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby and Warren - making Ohio's second largest labor council.

Our basic believe is that worker rights are human rights.
While we serve as the political voice and arm of the local affiliated with this council, it also supports improving rights of all workers. Any local union can affiliate with the Council.  Those who are not represented  by unions, but support workers, can sign up as Working America members.

At our monthly meetings, we:
Update our members about ongoing labor disputes, boycotts and political positions of the national and state federations.
Interview and screen candidates for local public office throughout our region, endorsing those who support workers rights while educating our members about positions adverse to working men and women.
Assist, promote and act on behalf of any worker or group of workers whose needs come within the scope of our activities.

The senior officers are:
Executive Secretary/ Director Diane S. Walsh and President Thomas Ritchie, Sr..
Both are politically active and serve on a variety of boards throughout our region and state, including the United Way Board of Directors.

The Ohio AFL-CIO was formed in 1958 to battle a right-to-work campaign backed by Ohio Republicans and big businesses. Since that merger of the state’s craft and industrial unions, the Ohio AFL-CIO has been at the forefront of struggles for political power and economic and social justice for working families. Our strength derives from 600,000 union men and women who are affiliated with the Ohio AFL-CIO through 40 international unions and 1,500 local unions. Along with hundreds of thousands of union retirees, they are the individuals who provide the collective power of the Ohio AFL-CIO.

Unitedway Labor Liason

United Way and the labor movement have enjoyed a beneficial and long-lasting partnership that has engaged hundreds of thousands of working people--union members and non- members alike--in programs that benefit communities across the country, and assisted millions of workers in their time of need.

In recent years, the AFL-CIO and the United Way have undergone organizational changes that have led to an increased focus on developing sustainable solutions to the problems facing working families and communities around the country and creating programs that bring diverse organizations together to advance the common good and address the root causes of social and economic inequality. The United Way and the labor movement share a common vision of prosperous, inclusive, diverse and safe communities where every member of the community has access to a quality public education, fair wages, productive work opportunities, and accessible, affordable, quality healthcare.
